A Beautiful Surprise Proposal at Castiglion del Bosco, Val d’Orcia

A romantic dinner at Capanna House, a proposal overlooking the vineyards, and engagement portraits beneath an unexpected Tuscan rain.

As a proposal photographer in Tuscany, I am always drawn to places where an intimate moment can unfold within an extraordinary landscape. Capanna vineyard, within the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco estate in Val d’Orcia, is one of those places: a winding road between the vines, a stone house framed by cypress trees, and wooded hills stretching into the distance.

To my eye, it is one of Tuscany’s most beautiful vineyard settings.

Near Montalcino, Capanna combines the character of the Tuscan countryside with the privacy of an exceptional luxury retreat. For Sue and Rick, it became the setting for an evening with a surprise at its heart.

A Romantic Dinner at Capanna House

Sue and Rick had booked a romantic dinner at Capanna House, surrounded by the estate’s vineyards. Rick had also booked me to photograph his surprise proposal.

The setting already held everything the story needed: an open landscape, a quiet vineyard road and the stone house where their dinner would take place. Beneath its timber portico, a table dressed with linen, candles and pastel flowers brought a delicate elegance to the rustic surroundings.

My approach was to give the moment its place in the landscape while keeping Sue and Rick at the centre of the photographs. At Capanna, both could belong naturally in the same frame.

The Proposal Above the Vines

Rick went down on one knee on the winding road overlooking the vineyard.

Behind them, the curves of the road and the rows of vines carried the view toward the distant cypresses. In front of that expansive landscape, the proposal remained wonderfully intimate: Sue’s reaction, Rick looking up at her, and the embrace that followed while he was still kneeling.

As a proposal photographer in Tuscany, these are the gestures I want to preserve. The setting gives the photographs their sense of place; the small, spontaneous exchanges make them personal.

Once they were standing together again, there was time for quieter portraits and a closer look at the engagement ring.

Engagement Portraits Around Capanna

The grounds around Capanna House offered a beautiful variety of settings within a short walk.

We photographed beside the warm stone walls, beneath the cypress trees and near the circular stone well overlooking the hills. Wide compositions gave space to the vineyards and the layered landscape of Val d’Orcia. Closer portraits followed their expressions, joined hands and easy smiles.

There were playful moments too: movement across the lawn, a turn that sent Sue’s floral dress flowing, and laughter between portraits.

The colours of her dress found an echo in the flowers arranged for dinner. Under the portico, the soft pinks and warm pastel tones created a gentle connection between the couple, the table and the house. It was a lovely setting for photographs that felt elegant without losing their spontaneity.

A Transparent Umbrella and a Rainbow

During the session, the rain arrived.

We continued photographing with a transparent umbrella, making the changing weather part of their engagement portraits. Beside the tall cypress trees, it created another intimate setting: the two of them beneath its clear canopy, with the grounds of Capanna House around them.

A rainbow also appeared above the vineyard, giving us an unexpected backdrop for a portrait of them holding hands.

For an engagement photographer in Tuscany, there is something rewarding about responding to the conditions as they unfold. The rain brought a different atmosphere to the session and became a memorable part of Sue and Rick’s story.

Planning a Proposal in Val d’Orcia

Capanna holds a distinctive place within Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco. Its appeal lies in the relationship between the house and the landscape: stone, cypresses, vineyard rows and uninterrupted views across the Tuscan hills.

For Sue and Rick, those surroundings brought together a romantic dinner, a surprise proposal and their first portraits as an engaged couple.
